TRAVERSE CTY - A band of roving musicians and a pair of dangerous highwaymen
are all a part of the next Theatre for Children presentation at the
Old Town Playhouse. The Bremen Town Musicians, by Pat Hale and Al Bahret, as
adapted from the Grimm's Fairy Tale, opens today with performances at 1 and 3 p.m.
The children's musical will be presented on the mainstage of the theater
on Saturday and Sunday afternoons through May 13. Performances are at 1 and 3 p.m. each day.
Directed by Brian Davis and Billie Thompson, The Bremen Town Musicians
features Kathleen Beagle as Mistress Mabel VonderLiverwurst, who kicks the
animal out of the barnyard. The animals decide to go to Bremen Town to become
musicians. Singing along the way, the sassy cat, played by Barb Barton; the
old hound dog, dapper played by Pete Nelson; the cocky rooster, played by
Don Kuehlhorn; and the little donkey played by Rikie Kamps; head off to Bremen Town.
Along the way, they happen, upon a castle and overhear that the
scoundrels Reginald, played by Steve Gould, and his accomplice Roscoe,
played by Mindi Ditmar have abducted Mistress Mabel. Working together, they
rescue her, and a happy ending is guaranteed.
"Many of us know this story about the dog on top of the donkey, the
cat on top the dog, and the rooster on top of them all," said Judy Heffron,
producer of the show and coordinator of the Theatre for Children program.
"This adaptation brings to life that legendary tale from the Brothers Grimm."
For those involved in the show, the work of portraying animals has
been the greatest challenge.
"These performers have put real character into the animals," said Heffron.
"We are positive children of all ages will adore this show."
"Besides the great characters and storyline, the music is exceptional,
and the directors chose a strong cast of vacalists..some veteran playhouse
performers and some new comers," she said.
The pianist is Gerie Schubert; costumes by Jan Meyer and Kathie Fralik; lighting
and sound is by Paul Molnar and properties are by Dee Stevens and Kevin Tomaszewski.
